For this next project I am doing a live project for a lady who is head of the visitors study centre for the National Trust in the Studland/Swanage area. At this centre they teach visiting students about the surrounding area and its history, how to preserve it and what species of animals you might expect to see there.
One of the other subjects they teach you at the centre is about war time unexploded ordnance. They do this as occasionally unexploded shells, missiles and bombs are washed up are unearthed in the area, this is due to the history of the location. If you were to find or see anything dangerous they advise you to note the location, keep a safe distance and dial 999 and ask for the police or coastguard immediately.
So for this project I will be making a replica of a WW2 bomb called a sea mattress bomb. I am doing this type of bomb because it has actually been found in the National Trust area. The team at the centre would like a teaching aid to show students from a wide age range what a very old, rusted unexploded WW2 bomb would look like and how not to touch it but to reported it straight away.
I will use my research and making skills, as well as my artistic licence to construct what will hopefully be a very close replica of a World War 2 bomb.
